Search Engines
Search sites - Make sure your company is listed in the Open Source Directory. This is a directory supported by volunteers and business owners that are compiling a list of everything on the Internet.
You can enter your information for free and it helps the search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN's new search engine Bing.com. All search results direct potential users to your website.
One of the latest developments with search engines is they seem to have gotten smarter. No longer does a table laden mess of HTML and embedded styles like <font> tags keep your site in top rankings. The development of 'readers' like Jaws for visually impaired users allows everyone to use the Internet. Web Designers had to become more savvy, and separate design from content and now most sites are written in CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to control the design of the site, and the content reads much like a regular word processing document. One of the pioneers of this type of design was Zen Garden and it's worth a visit to see the power of CSS and how it affects the sites we design today.
Once your site is separated into CSS and XHTML, Google and other search engines can readily see your content and catagorize it to be easily found by people looking for certain 'keywords' that are pertinent to your industry and it is important to include these terms throughout your site.
You can use a service to submit your new website to the search engines, some are free and some charge a fee but there are other factors involved such as the age of the domain and how often the content is updated. Google has a great Webmaster dashboard to help track all kinds of information useful to improving your site's content. Register free for a Google account and add your site. Install Analytics to see traffic statistics and upload a site map. Site maps are very important to search engines and make sure it's kept up to date. Site maps have a link to every page on your site and is a separate document that resides on your web server.
